ATO Locomotive Technical Specification and Procurement
The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates a fully automatic train on 13 km of track to haul iron ore between the mine and the concentrator in Labrador City.
This unmanned train system uses nine electric locomotives which had reached the end of their useful life. SYSTRA Canada provided technical assistance to IOC to select the best option for the replacement of these locomotives and accompanied IOC during the whole process, from the selection of the solution until the delivery and site acceptance test of the locomotives.
SYSTRA Canada provided technical assistance to IOC to select the type of overhaul or replacement of the ATO locomotives.
The current fleet state of maintenance and ATO needs were previously established by SYSTRA Canada in studies made in 2008 and 2015.
The technical assistance included:
- Update of cost estimates for rehabilitation and replacement scenarios;
- Recommendations on short term and long-term plan to maintain ATO service;
- Production of the technical specification for locomotive overhaul;
- Preparation of bid documents;
- Assistance in bid analysis and selection of contractor
- Technical assistance for design reviews, testing and commissioning.
