SYSTRA, as lead for an equal share joint venture with Mace and Comtech (operating as MCS Partners), has been awarded the Delivery Partner (DP) contract for Yonge North Subway Extension and the Scarborough Subway Extension projects by Metrolinx in Ontario, Canada.

The approximately CA$15B Subway Extensions program is aimed at radially expanding the Toronto Subway network and improving overall the Greater Toronto Area metro rail services.

The 12-year DP assignment is to ensure the two mega projects are delivered on time, budget and with the highest levels of safety and quality.

The projects objectives are to:

  • Create strong connections by improving transit service;
  • Complete travel experience by improving travel time and reliability;
  • Promote sustainable and healthy communities by proving sustainable modes of transport;
  • Provide efficient and effective project delivery by ensuring the project surpasses their operations performance requirements;
  • Integrating and acting as a proactive and engaged owner to meet and deliver all the obligation of Metrolinx in a timely manner and as a unified team.

MCS Partners are leading the transformation of Metrolinx delivery culture and will be integrated within Metrolinx to manage these two megaprojects.

The projects consist of 16 km of tunnels and 9 subway/metro stations with each being delivered by a P3 type (Design Build Finance – DBF) advance tunnel contract followed by a Progressive Design Build (PDB) Stations, Railways and Systems contract.  The use of PDB for these transit megaprojects is a first of its kind in Toronto and MCS partners is leading the delivery for this framework.

    1. Yonge North Subway Extension

    This project will extend the TTC’s Line 1 subway (located in the City of Toronto) by 8 km north from Finch Station into York Region. The extension will offer connections to as many as six major existing and future transit lines. This will make travel between York Region and downtown Toronto more efficient by increasing capacity, speed, and convenience while cutting down on traffic congestion and pollution.

    2. Scarborough Subway Extension

    This subway line extension will be about 8 km long and add three stops along TTC’s Bloor Danforth Line 2 from the Kennedy Station terminal. The Project will feature connections to other modes of transit – local TTC bus services, regional GO bus lines, the future Durham Region Transit BRT line, and the Eglinton Crosstown LRT.
