Refurbishment of Rocky Mountaineer “Goldleaf” Bi-Level Dome Cars

The Great Canadian Railtour Company (Rocky Mountaineer) offers over 65 unique vacation packages and four distinctive rail routes through British Columbia, Alberta and the Pacific Northwest in Canada. Rocky Mountaineer launched a major refurbishment project of their 16 bi-Level dome coaches, named GoldLeaf 2.0 to update and re-design the interior of the coaches that were built between 1995 and 2007.

The first floor is a dining area while the second floor has coach seating and allows passengers to view the rocky mountain scenery though the coaches large dome windows.

The current project spans a total of six years, with one prototype coach initially refurbished under a separate contract, followed by two coaches the first, 2nd, and 3rd year and the remaining nine coaches over the remaining three years.


SYSTRA Canada (formerly CANARAIL) is responsible for the delivery of the entire program to revitalize Rocky Mountaineer’s fleet of 16 GoldLeaf bi-level dome cars under a turn-key model. This includes all work required for the renovation of the cars:

  • Engineering services of the rolling stock (structural, electrical, mechanical, interior design);
  • Technical specifications development;
  • Procurement of parts, equipments and goods (seats, HVAC, parts, elevators, kitchen equipment and all other passenger compartments amenities);
  • Project management, including supervision of works carried by sub-contractors (namely workshop and suppliers);
  • Development and execution of the QA management plan (on-site supervision).

The experience on this turnkey project exposed SYSTRA Canada’s personnel to all aspects of railway car modification, materials acquisition and project management.

More specifically, SYSTRA Canada’s mandate includes:

  • Complete engineering: feasibility, interior design, mock-ups, modelling, engineering and shop drawings, assembling procedures;
  • Design validation to ensure compliance of said design with various regulations;
  • Drafting of contracts and tender documents;
  • Execution of mechanical and electrical works;
  • Overseeing execution of works;
  • Systems verification and testing;
  • Quality management plan;
  • Quality control and acceptance testing;
  • Assistance in commissioning the systems;
  • Warranty tracking;
  • Drafting of operations and maintenance manuals;
  • A continuous improvement program with close monitoring of the performance of designs in operation.
