Renaissance Car Aging Study for VIA Rail Canada
VIA Rail Canada (VIA) is currently in the process of establishing the added value of refurbishing their fleet of 53 Renaissance cars.
A key part of that effort is related to how well the carbody shells are performing. The mandate given to SYSTRA Canada (formerly CANARAIL) relates to the evaluation of the structural condition of the fleet.
SYSTRA Canada was responsible for the assessment of the structural condition of the fleet taking the following into account:
- The general structural condition of the cars;
- Their carbon steel construction and observed level of corrosion;
- Observations were based on a representative sampling of the fleet (approximately 10 cars) including coach and sleeper cars;
- Thickness loss and its effect on structural capacity.
