Hat trick in Guinea for SYSTRA’s Canada Team

SYSTRA’s Montreal team has signed its third contract in less than four months with longstanding client Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG), with whom we have been working for just over two decades.

CBG’s core business is to operate the Sangarédi bauxite mining activities in the country’s Boké region and we are helping optimise both production and delivery.

The latest contract, awarded in December 2017, is worth nearly CAD9.97m (€6.44m), for a year-long project to upgrade CBG’s fleet of 632 wagons so that they can work with a new rotary system for loading and unloading. A similar upgrading project for the same fleet was carried out in 2005.

The win follows a contract signed in November 2017, for the construction of a new rail yard, new passing sidings and a storage area. Lasting nearly two years, it is divided into five lots: earthworks on the Boké railway; a new road at Bouléré; mine roads at Koobi and Tchiapikoué; various lines and networks of project installations; and a watering system of mine tracks.

The largest win, worth CAD13.09m (€8.45m) and signed in September 2017, is an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for the expansion of the Boké railway line. SYSTRA Canada will act as the EPCM contractor in partnership with local firms. The project’s goal is to increase production capacity from 26 million to 51 million tonnes of bauxite by 2020. As most of the engineering and procurement services have been completed under previous programmes, our main role will be construction management of the contractors involved in expanding and upgrading the railway.

Speaking about the three contract wins, Dave Spagnolo, Senior Vice President, North America region (AMR), said: "These contracts demonstrate our Rolling Stock and Freight & Mining teams’ continued ability to handle the significant volume of requests from CBG and to implement effective solutions for the management of complex site supervision mandates. The teams have been working with the client for just over 20 years and have first-hand knowledge of the complexities and challenges involved in delivering such projects. I would like to congratulate the team members who won this work and I have every confidence in the project and technical specialists who will deliver these programmes."

SYSTRA Canada’s Rolling Stock and Freight & Mining business units working around the world

SYSTRA’s Canada team has worked on projects across the globe and is currently involved in several large-scale, highly challenging assignments. In Saudi Arabia, SYSTRA Canada was a shareholder in the joint venture for the delivery of the North South Railway, and specifically responsible for procurement of the rolling stock. In Malaysia, teams worked on the design of the 100km Kuantan – Kerteh Railway that is used to transport petrochemical products. In Canada, work is ongoing for the delivery of two more passenger railcars for the prestigious Rocky Mountaineer’s GoldLeaf service range, as part of a contract to refurbish 16 coaches. This brings to seven the number of coaches refurbished as part of an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract signed in 2013.
